Go into the discussion with a goal and a question list. Ask how the doctor will check your health: through questions, an examination or tests. Get that answer before agreeing to treatment.

Choose a visit you can ask questions in
A visit can happen in person or through telehealth: care discussed on a video call, by phone or through an online exchange. Ask who will check your health and how you can ask them questions.
A state medical board is the public body that gives doctors permission to practise.
Online doctors need a licence or another form of proper permission for the state the patient is in when the visit takes place. That was the national medical-board guidance as of September 26, 2026.

A form is the start of a discussion
At the September 26, 2026, check, medical-board guidance said a fixed online question form by itself was not enough for treatment. The doctor must gather the information needed for a care decision and have a way to ask further questions.
